Scientific, Documented, and Rigorous: Allamah Mir Hamid Husayn’s Methodology in Analyzing Hadith Chains
In his book Abaqat al-Anwar, Allamah Mir Hamid Husayn al-Hindi established the Imamate of the pure Imams (peace be upon them) through a rigorous scholarly method relying on Sunni sources. He focused on mutawatir reports and reports accompanied by contextual evidence, conducting a documented examination of the reliability of narrations. He did not stop there; even for mutawatir reports, he presented additional evidence and indicators to reinforce certainty regarding their issuance and meaning. This method, based on authoritative sources accepted by opponents and on precise analysis of chains, demonstrates the strength of Shi'i reasoning in defending its truthfulness rationally and decisively, and constitutes a prominent model for hadith and doctrinal research.

Mir Hamid Husayn’s Method of Reasoning in Abaqat al-Anwar

In light of principles such as fairness, ethics, trustworthiness, and the pursuit of truth discussed in earlier texts—principles fully consistent with the critical and scholarly method of Allamah Mir Hamid Husayn al-Hindi—we now turn to his method of reasoning in Abaqat al-Anwar. This book, entitled “Establishing the Imamate of the Pure Imams from the Qur'an and Sunnah,” addresses texts which Shi'is regard as indicating the immediate Imamate of Amir al-Mu'minin Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him) after the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). What deserves attention here is establishing the indication of these texts for the true school, an issue resting on two principal elements: “chain-based confirmation” and the “sound indication” of these texts for the intended conclusion.

Reasoning from the Sources of Opponents

The author of Abaqat al-Anwar particularly stressed the necessity of using sources that opponents themselves recognize as reliable proof when establishing narrations. This characteristic forms the basis of the validity of his research and made his arguments acceptable among scholars and thinkers. This precise and scholarly method is not confined to presenting documented studies on the Imamate; it is also a logical and documented model for criticizing and analyzing religious sources.
By reasoning from Sunni sources and giving close attention to the soundness of chains, the author of Abaqat al-Anwar was able to offer scholarly and documented analyses that remain a reliable reference for researchers in religious studies.

The Chain as the Foundation of Reasoning

Mir Hamid Husayn began his research with a meticulous study of the chains of the texts. He believed that before discussing the indication of any narration, one must first establish the soundness of its chain with certainty. This is because soundness of the chain is the basis of every argument, and without it no acceptable proof can be presented. In other words, texts lacking a reliable chain, or that are mursal or weak, cannot serve as a basis for argument in foundational or even subsidiary questions. This principle has special significance in the issue of the Imamate, one of the most sensitive and important Islamic questions. Indeed, religious and scholarly research should be built only on sound and mutawatir narrations.

From Chain to Certainty in Narrations of the Imamate

In this context Mir Hamid Husayn points to a matter of utmost importance: narrations concerning the Imamate must, alongside sound chains, be known with certainty to have been issued. In other words, there must be evidence and indicators leading to certainty that they were issued by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). He emphasizes that a solitary report, though it may be relied upon in subsidiary matters, is insufficient to establish issues such as the Imamate, which are foundational and doctrinal matters. For this reason, his research turns to mutawatir narrations whose issuance and indication he establishes clearly and decisively.

Tawatur and Reasoning from Opponents’ Sources

This matter is also agreed upon by opponents. For example, Ibn Taymiyyah, in explaining the hadith “I am the city of knowledge and Ali is its gate,” said: “A solitary report does not yield knowledge except in the presence of indicators.” In this research, Mir Hamid Husayn first examines the names of the Companions, then the Successors and hadith transmitters through the various centuries from the second through the thirteenth Hijri century. He carefully introduces all Sunni transmitters and hadith scholars who narrated these reports. This work shows their number and their different generations; once tawatur is established for a hadith, there is no need to mention further evidence or texts showing its tawatur. For this reason, the author of Abaqat al-Anwar did not cite indicators concerning the hadith of al-Thaqalayn, because in addition to its tawatur it was also narrated in one of the two Sahihs.

Truthfulness from the Tongue of Opponents

This scholarly and argumentative method followed by Mir Hamid Husayn in his hadith research, especially in establishing the Imamate, shows the strength of Shi'i reasoning in defending its truthfulness decisively and with documentation. The noteworthy point is that Shi'is are never compelled to rely solely upon their own sources in establishing their beliefs; by using the very sources and narrations accepted by Sunni opponents, they can establish the truthfulness of their school clearly and documentarily. This distinctive feature is not only evidence for the soundness of Shi'i arguments, but also evidence for rationality and wisdom within Shi'ism.

A Scholarly Defense of Shi'ism

This scholarly and fair approach, which keeps away from every form of prejudice and preconception and derives evidence for the truthfulness of the Shi'i school from the opponents’ own sources, is a testimony to the scholarly and religious strength of this school. This argumentative method not only makes the Shi'i school prevail over other religious schools, but also clearly establishes its scholarly ability and competence before others. It displays Shi'i rational and scholarly strength in defending its doctrinal principles and presents it to the world as a profound, rational religious school supported by reliable sources.

Distinctive Tawatur and the Hadith of Ghadir

Tawatur is one of the principal conditions for accepting a hadith as authentic. It means that a report has been transmitted through several different routes and by multiple groups of transmitters such that the possibility of error or alteration becomes nearly impossible. In many cases tawatur is readily established on these recognized principles, but in other cases its conditions are fulfilled doubly and with greater force, particularly in the hadith of Ghadir.

The Hadith of Ghadir: Unparalleled Tawatur in Sunni Sources

The hadith of Ghadir is among the foremost mutawatir reports in which the Prophet (peace be upon him) introduced Imam Ali (peace be upon him) as the guardian and Imam of Muslims. It was transmitted mutawatirly in Sunni sources and narrated by more than 120 Companions and Successors. This number demonstrates the great importance of this event. Yet its tawatur goes beyond ordinary principles. The late Mir Hamid Husayn reports from “al-Hafiz Ibn Kathir” that “Imam al-Haramayn al-Juwayni” said: “I was astonished and said: I saw in Baghdad a volume with a bookseller containing transmissions of this report, and it was written on it that it was the twenty-eighth volume of the routes of the hadith ‘Whomever I am his master, Ali is his master’; after it came the twenty-ninth volume.”
He then cites texts from a group of hadith masters such as al-Dhahabi, Ibn al-Jazari, al-Suyuti, and others, indicating the tawatur of the hadith of Ghadir. By this method, the late Mir Hamid Husayn clearly shows that the hadith of Ghadir is not merely at the level of tawatur but surpasses it in historical and religious importance.

Decisive Reasoning from the Hadith of Ghadir

This precise and documented report on the hadith of Ghadir has particular importance, especially because it has been transmitted in Sunni sources reliably and through numerous routes. It confirms the strength of Shi'i doctrinal reasoning in defending and establishing the truthfulness of Imam Ali’s Imamate through authoritative and mutawatir sources. In fact, reliance on hadiths of this kind, which possess great strength and authority in terms of chain and tawatur, is a scholarly and precise method that no scholar can doubt or deny. This method is not only strong academically; it also shows commitment to scholarly principles in research and reliance on reliable sources.

Beyond Tawatur: Evidence for Narrations of the Imamate

Although the tawatur and strength of these hadiths make further evidence unnecessary, Mir Hamid presents a collection of reliable and repeated narrations to emphasize the importance of the matter. Among them is the hadith of the Ark, narrated from Companions such as Amir al-Mu'minin Ali, Lady Fatimah al-Zahra, Ibn Abbas, Abu Dharr, and Abu Sa'id al-Khudri by major Sunni scholars. He also cites the hadith “I am the city of knowledge,” narrated by dozens of honored Companions, including Imam Hasan, Imam Husayn, Abdullah ibn Abbas, Jabir ibn Abdullah, Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, Abdullah ibn Umar, Amr ibn al-As, Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman, and Anas ibn Malik.
He also refers to other hadiths that display the unique rank of Amir al-Mu'minin Ali and constitute strong evidence for this matter:
The hadith of Position: the Prophet said, “You are to me in the position of Aaron to Moses, except that there is no prophet after me.” The hadith of Guardianship: the Prophet said, “Whomever I am his master, Ali is his master.” The hadith of al-Thaqalayn, which emphasizes holding fast to the Qur'an and the Ahl al-Bayt.
These and other hadiths clearly show Imam Ali’s lofty rank and establish his Imamate through reliable and mutawatir sources, making Mir Hamid Husayn’s method of reasoning powerful and scholarly, one that cannot be overlooked.
“I am the house of wisdom and Ali is its gate”; “I am the city of wisdom and Ali is its gate”; “I am the house of knowledge and Ali is its gate”; “I am the scale of knowledge and Ali is its two pans.”
He then mentions further evidence, each a clear proof of the greatness and rank of Imam Ali: “I am the city of Paradise and Ali is its gate”; “I am the city of jurisprudence and Ali is its gate”; “Ali is the gate of my knowledge, and he explains what I conveyed to my community after me”; “Ali ibn Abi Talib is the gate of Hittah”; “Nothing is transmitted from me except by me or Ali.”
These hadiths, transmitted by prominent Sunni figures in their authoritative books, are clear testimony to the truthfulness and lofty station of Amir al-Mu'minin Ali.

Manifest Truthfulness and Immediate Successorship

This matter is a radiant manifestation of the noble hadith, “that he who perishes might perish upon clear proof”; a hadith that indicates decisively the immediate caliphate of Amir al-Mu'minin Ali. In addition to the tawatur showing the certainty of these reports, there is abundant evidence removing every doubt and hesitation. Thus, despite attempts by the Umayyads and opponents of truth to conceal the light of Imam Ali’s guardianship with their shadows, the sun of Amir al-Mu'minin’s existence continues to shine and illuminate truth for those who seek it.

Scholarly Striving and the Firm Foundations of Shi'i Truthfulness

Mir Hamid Husayn’s research in this field is full of numerous benefits, valuable discussions, and precious investigations. Through his great scholarly striving and tireless effort, he laid firm foundations for hadiths such as the hadith of Position, Ghadir, and other narrations, thereby removing every doubt and hesitation. By researching well-known hadith authorities and studying famous books, Mir Hamid Husayn established that these hadiths are not merely historical reports; they are clear testimonies to the truthfulness of the Imamate of Amir al-Mu'minin Ali.
These hadiths are not merely reports; they are enduring messages reminding us that knowing and following Amir al-Mu'minin Ali is the key to guidance and salvation. Through his rigorous scholarly method, Mir Hamid Husayn recorded this truth in history forever.

Conclusion

With a scholarly, documented, and robust method, Mir Hamid Husayn al-Hindi established the Imamate of the pure Imams in Abaqat al-Anwar through the sources of the Qur'an and Sunnah. Relying on authenticating chains and the sound indication of narrations, he used Sunni sources as authoritative proof. Through precise analysis of chains, the tawatur of reports, and the trustworthiness of transmitters, he established reports such as the hadith of Ghadir, the hadith of Position, and other mutawatir narrations as decisive proof of the truthfulness of Amir al-Mu'minin Ali’s Imamate. He even offered supplementary evidence and indicators for mutawatir reports to reinforce certainty about their issuance and indication.
His method rested on reliance upon opponents’ sources and on precise chain analysis, showing the strength of Shi'i reasoning in a decisive and rational defense of its truthfulness. Mir Hamid Husayn’s research is not merely testimony to his scholarly greatness; it is an enduring legacy of scholarly striving that remains an authoritative reference in religious research.
These efforts show that the Shi'i school, by relying on reliable sources and scholarly arguments, is able to establish its truthfulness in a documented and rational manner. Through his precise and fair methodology, Mir Hamid Husayn not only established the position of Amir al-Mu'minin Ali as the Prophet’s immediate successor, but also presented the rationality and wisdom of the Shi'i school to the world. This scholarly legacy is a prominent model for religious and doctrinal research.
