The Charter of Awaiting at Ghadir
Al-Yawm: The Day the Sky Smiled
Let Us Sustain the Echo of Ghadir’s Covenant through Patience, Steadfast Perseverance, and Vigilant Commitment until the Appearance of the Last Imam of Ghadir
Ghadir is not merely an event in the past; it is the beginning of a covenant for the future. This covenant began with the proclamation of the authority (wilayah) of the Commander of the Faithful, Ali, peace be upon him, and continues until the appearance of the last Imam in that same lineage.
If we understand Ghadir as a “covenant,” awaiting can no longer mean merely sitting and waiting. Anyone who considers themselves to be awaiting must demonstrate that they still stand by that covenant.
In verse 200 of Surah Al Imran, God places three great commands alongside one another:
“Be patient, persevere together, and remain steadfast on guard.”
Three words; yet within them one can discern a complete charter for awaiting the Imam:
Patience means standing firm amid storms not merely to survive, but to remain steadfast so that you do not abandon the path of truth.
Mutual perseverance means that this steadfastness should not be merely individual: we should take one another’s hands, strengthen one another on the path of truth, and not allow hardships to divide the ranks of the faithful.
And maintaining vigilance means being guardians of the frontiers: the frontiers of faith, truth, allegiance to divinely appointed authority, and the covenant we have made with the Imam.
Through these very three words, awaiting the Imam is transformed from a feeling into a responsibility.
One who truly awaits the Imam does not merely ask: “When will the reappearance take place?”
They ask themselves:
What have I built for that day? Where do I stand? What have I defended? How steadfast have I been through hardships? And how much have I helped others remain on this path?
Ghadir teaches us that faith is not merely knowing the Imam; it is remaining loyal to the Imam.
And loyalty comes at a cost.
Sometimes one must be patient. Sometimes one must help another person rise. Sometimes one must stand firm against a wave that seeks to shift the boundaries of belief.
It is here that “awaiting” acquires meaning.
The last Imam is the Imam of that very Ghadir; and one who awaits him is someone who does not allow the covenant of Ghadir to become merely a historical memory in their life.
Ghadir was not a day that came to an end; it was a path that began.
And awaiting is the continuation of that very path.
You Are Part of This Covenant
One who truly awaits does not remain idle; they build, stand firm, and carry on.
If this covenant holds meaning for you too, do not underestimate your part in it. A step toward greater understanding, a sound defense of the truth, a helping hand extended to another, and even passing on a message can be part of this very murābaṭah—steadfast vigilance and readiness.
Do not keep this message only on your own phone. Pass it on to someone who may need to be reminded once again:
We do not merely wait for a momentous event; we prepare for it.
Ghadir is not merely a memory; it is a plan for the future.
